Could it happen? Could one single technology be used to control the world?

Awesome story. I adore the fact that everything is becoming more and more multifunctional, and eventually it will end up as a single box containing all that you need. Except the most important of all - the world-controlling tech. Damn. =)

Gee, I gotta have this one in my 401K!!!!

But, in all seriousness, I think the success of open source software and, more generally, of technical innovation indicates that there will be lots of competitors for the foreseeable future. Creativity usually flourishes not in the center, but on the periphery. If there ever were one large, monolithic corporation, it would quickly become a hide-bound, value destroying bureaucracy. It would thus become a target for lots of smart folks who want to make lots of money and who would take share from it. Greed works like little else.
